Tranny Install from Hell

Hello all,
I finally removed and replaced the outer pilot bearing race (with a Dremel
bit...ouch)on my 84ksq. I installed a new clutch kit (using a centering tool)
onto my newly machined flywheel and anticipated an easy re-installation of the
transmission. I was very, very wrong. After renting a transmission jack
(piece of rubbish really...no chain to hold transmission in place ...I had to
use solid rubber bungy cords)with two knobs for axis adjustments I managed to
get the edge of the bell housing to within a half-inch (all the way around) of
the engine block... but no further. I still have some "wiggle-room" on the
left/right axis...and a tiny bit of play on the up/down axis..nothing is being
stressed. The problem is that I can't get the ##@@@!!****&& transmission "all
the way in". I've backed the transmission out several times to make sure that
the pilot bearing face is still intact and that there are no cables or other
obstructions in the way (there aren't...it just won't budge any further
forward). BTW, I also fabricated (out of 4x4's) a device to allow me to raise
and lower the front of the engine per the Bentley...still doesn't help. I'm
running out of nice weather here and I don't have a garage (84ksq is sitting
on my concrete driveway and is raised about two feet in the air on cinder
blocks).
Does anyone know any "tricks" for persuading the transmission to mate with the
block? Heeeeeeeeeellllllppppppppp. TIA
Regards,
