The passenger door lock does nothing (key turns in lock, nowt else). The
driver's side locks both doors and tailgate. Should the passenger lock do
something? (There is evidence of at least two previous alarm installs in this
car, I think one of 'em may have fired the locks).

That's where I'll go this weekend. Thanks for all advice everyone. I lost time
on the electrics last weekend after a heart-stopping encounter with an inlet
manifold gasket (it leaks). Some hero had over-tightened the hex-bolts 
(probably trying to stop the leak via the shotgun method). After snapping
my favourite ball-end allen key in the bolt head, I warmed the engine and
hammered a 12mm socket over the head. The sigh of relief when it 'cracked'
could probably be heard by all list members.....
