clacking sound from 12v 2.8 engine..

Recently, I have noticed a clacking noise coming from
somewhere in the lower front of the engine on our '96
A4 2.8q.. It is similar to the lifter noise, but
louder and more metallic, not to mention more
sporadic. Temp of engine seems to make no difference.
What are things to look for? Waterpump? Idlers?
