Car bras (the leatherette ones you fasten to the front end of the car)
actually damages paint. Not only do they trap water, but they buffet
from the wind and causes surface abrasion. A much better solution is
those "clear bras" which is a transparent film you apply over the paint,
but these are expensive and have to be custom installed by someone who
knows how to do it right. They are also only available for recent
models.
