Big Brakes

Yes I know about threshold braking. I may have not expressed myself
properly, let me rehash it for you Unka and gang. I did not mean locking
the tires up was the best way to stop. I meant if you can't lock up your
tires with the brakes you have they are under powered for the amount of grip
you have, or other factors including weight. As I believe Huw said the puny
brakes can lock up the stock tires quite easily, though maybe not repeatedly
because of heat issues, not my concern with this topic.

I have puny stock single piston brakes and large 225/40 16" Kumho 712's.
I cannot lock up my tires until I reach lower speeds with this tire and
brake combo. I could lock up the stock 14" at most any speed. So as I said
before, having properly effective brakes can really be based on how you can
get the tires locked up or get ABS to activate. If you can't get to there
at good speeds it means you can't hit threshold which is immediately
proceeding lock up or ABS activation. Imagine trying to be fast at the
track when you can hit threshold going into a corner at a high rate of
speed, threshold is real close to that dreaded lock up that we don't like
and causing cars to fly off the road and/or track.

So all in all I didn't mean to come across as saying locking up tires is
the best way to stop, that is just dangerous and scary. I hope to get the
BIRA Sys1 brakes onto the new 90q20v next spring. The single piston brakes
are weak with the big amounts of grip I have, plus the rotors actually cost
MORE than my Coleman rotors for the big brakes do, $109 for single piston
rotors on a 90q20v. I can't wait to actually get to a track event someday.
Though it seems everytime I want to do this I am either broke or wanting to
use that money for toys or repairs on my car, dilemma for sure, learn how to
drive smoothly and faster than ever before or put more into the car...

Cheers!
