That's basically what I did before.  When I was removing the old nut,
part of the threaded rod snapped off (with nut) and by using 2 nuts I
was able to get it to work.  As I mentioned, with the new pads, I can't
seem to get the cables to have enough slack to replace the nuts (yes, I
retracted the pistons and the calipers are installed.

I wonder if I should try installing the cables and nut first, then
pulling the cables to the caliper.  I just assumed there would be enough
slack (and with a new rod I'm sure there is).
