It is very unfortunate about the money, however, 
I find it rather unlikely that the virus was sent intentionally...at
least, mailing someone a known virus on purpose is very unsubtle and they
would have be a little dense to think they could get away with it. In my
experience, it is far more likely that your friend was the unwitting
victim of the virus as were you. Just my $.02
