Screwed over by fellow Qlister...

Dan Sinclair dsinclair at icare.snalf.com
Thu Sep 6 10:04:17 EDT 2001

Sorry to hear about your poor experience Stephen.

I've received a number of parts from fellow q-listers: from speakers, to
wheel caps, to family CD-ROMs, to... some for free, and some for a fee, but
I've always been impressed with the quality of the folks I 'meet' and do
business with from this list. We should all double our efforts to pay
promptly and do our part to make incidents like this an uncommon event in
our online community.

If it's any consolation, the person who failed to pay and sent you a virus
probably didn't send you a virus intentionally. Most of the viruses that
are circulating the web are automated. They scan the infected machine for
email addresses, then automatically replicate themselves and email
themselves to other addresses. Your email address was in this person's
address book, and the virus no doubt emailed itself to you (and everyone
else in his address book). On the flip side, given that the virus is
replicating, this person's PC is now undoubtedly completely infested with
this virus, and depending on the virus, his PC is probably a mess - good
things happen to good people...

Best regards,

Dan Sinclair

Hey, Steve, since I occasionally buy and offer stuff for sale, I'd be
interested in the individual's name for my own protection.

I understand your disappointment. I recently bought seats and used axles
from an active list seller that were described as "very good condition"
and "intact", respectively, only to receive seats with ripped leather and
an axle with a torn boot. My goal was to have spares for quick replacement
should my car need it.

That's the supply line to the turbo. Remove the bolt, cut off the crimped
fitting and put on a short piece of replacement hose and a coupla hose
clamps.
Audi no longer makes that exact part and will sell you the same thing at 10
times the price.

Sounds like the assembly carrying coolant to the turbo.

To: sam at edgetoedge.co.nz

Only deep in the bowels of Ingolstadt do the men/women
in the white coats have the true answer ;)

However, per a VW/Audi tech who has been around for
eons:

I asked a similar question, as I used to have an 84
Quantum (Passat) that took Dexron in the pwr. steering
tank. Later on, I bought my first type $$ which was
my baptism oil of Audidom. Needless to say, that car
had a leak of the mysterious green oil which ate into
the wallet at an annoying rate.

I asked my tech friend about this, having owned VAG
products since 1980...he explained that the Pentosin
fluid was introduced when Audi went with the hydraulic
brake boosting system (and self leveller to the
European market). Dexron wasn't considered to be up
to the task, as the working pressure in the brake
booster is substantially higher than a regular PS
rack.

Later mass-market Audis (like my '93 100) reverted
back to a conventional vacuum brake booster but
continued to use the mysterious Goo2000. So does my
1991 Jetta, while the very similar 1986 Golf uses ATF
(PS hydraulic only on these cars).

I'm going to speculate that there was an effort to
standardize on the Goo in the late '80s or early '90s.

Flame away!

I agree with Stott..If it is anything like the 4000 handle, then its not a
major deal.

I used a dremel tool and punch to grind down the rivit holding the assembly
in then punch it out.

You can find a suitable bolt to replace or re-rivit as I did. Once the
assembly is out of the car, it is easy to deal with on a bench vice. I
reassembled with a rod salvaged from a parts car..that may be the hardest
part to find, if the dealer does not sell separately.

No need to buy a new assembly. BTDT-2or3X

Ben

<[Guess I'll have to disagree with that. It's true that the rod is attached
to the handle mechanism with a steel rivet. However, this can be drilled
out and replaced with other hardware. Check your car for fitment of course,
but I was able to use a bolt/nut combo. And a replacement rod is available
much cheaper. In typical Audi fashion, if they didn't expect it to be
replaced separately, they wouldn't even give it a part number, it would be
part of a larger assembly only.

Stott Hare]
[You have to replace the WHOLE ebrake handle. The threaded rod is attached
to the ebrake handle with some pressed in fittings so its not designed to be
taken apart... though with enough persistance.... I just did this in my
wifes 89 200tqa. Cost about 90.00 at the dealer for the handle

I also had to take the console out to get to it, its a bit of a pain to do.
You also need to be under the car as well to make the final adjustments to
the ebrake tension.

Rob]

[The parking brake cables mount on a little triangular metal piece under
the car, and this piece is pulled forward by a threaded rod, which is
attached to the ebrake handle.

The last time I replaced cables, the rod broke due to rust, but I was
able to clean the threads and get another nut on there. Now, with new
brake pads, the rod is not long enough, so I have to get a new one.

My question is this - how does the rod attach to the ebrake handle and
how do you gain access to it, from above or below?

Appreciate some been there done that on this.

Gerard,
BIRA doesn't sell the calipers or any other components other than
the brackets.

A Boxster setup will probably run you less than $1k. Calipers around
$200, lines about $100, rotors $150, bracket $200? Check BIRA's
web page and join BIRA if you want more info.

Hi!

I'm sure we all know about BIRA big brake stuff where they supply big
brake conversions using either the Porsche Boxster brakes or the 996
brakes. I just want to know if anyone knows how effective the Boxster
units are against those of the 996 if fitted onto a type-44 barge. What
do 996 calipers cost these days from BIRA? Last time I heard, it was a
few thousand for a front setup.

I thought I'd throw this out there on the list so when I check my e-mail
during my vacation in Bali then I will have at least some interesting
reading. :) As opposed to tonnes of work related e-mail where they'll
probably just be swearing at me! :(

Okay,
First off, I apologize for not getting back to you earlier.

I am going to contact Thomas Ehgartner and ask him if he is
willing to do a group buy on certain products. As such, I need
to get an idea of exactly who is definitely interested and what
products he/she is interested in.

The things that have been mentioned:
V8 all-red taillights (US spec)
Strut tower brace
Badgeless grille

Also, please confirm that you are located in the United States,
that's where I'm located. My plan is to do the following:

1. Get a firm quote from Mr. Ehgartner
2. Compare prices to what one can get here
3. Check a couple other sources as well
4. Once the price quoted is confirmed as being much better than the domestic
sources (meaning after taxes, duties and shipping), I will give each of you
a quote on how much it will cost
5. Assuming the quote is acceptable, I will then need payment in advance for
the item- the payment is non-refundable once the items are shipped, unless
you
can get someone to assume your order- terms similar to what Leigh did for
the
wheels
6. Upon receiving the material from Germany, I will then repackage and ship
out all of the items to the various individuals across the country. If
you're
local to me, then we could arrange delivery/pickup and save the shipping
costs.

Let me know if this works for you and I'll get the ball rolling.

As I have cc'ed the q-list and the 200q20v list, any listers with further
input,
let me know.

[Alexander van Gerbig- if you're reading this, perhaps we can piggyback
shipment,
depending on where you plan on shipping from.]

Okay,
First off, I apologize for not getting back to you earlier.

As I have cc'ed the q-list and the 200q20v list, any listers with further
input,
let me know.

[Alexander van Gerbig- if you're reading this, perhaps we can piggyback
shipment,
depending on where you plan on shipping from.]

Hi. That hose seems to me to be one of the turbo cooling lines. It runs
behind the timing belt cover to the top of the turbo. On my ur-q, it's not
really hard to replace.
