where's the engine code? (vw golf?)

I've got a free 1.8L engine sitting in my driveway thanks to a friend that 
works for a towing company. He belives its out of an A2 VW Golf, but not for 
sure. Where can I get the engine code off of it? Its pretty grimey, I 
couldn't find anything with a quick look over. Thanks for any help.
