Part II: where's the engine code (vw golf)

after a little engine degreaser and a little elbow grease i've found two 
things. Both on the spark plug side of the engine. First a serial number 
located left of center. Second, the audi and vw symbol in the middle followed 
by "3 ME". I've never heard of an ME code engine. As far as I know its CIS-E, 
how do you tell digifant? Anybody know what the specs are on this engine.
