Funny Brake Pedal Feel

My 87 5K TQW recently has gotten a funny feel to the brake pedal.  There
is a point, part way down in the travel, where the pedal seems to bind
or have resistance.

I've checked the fluid levels and pad levels and although the front pads
are noisy sometimes there still looks like 1 year or more left on the
pads...

Any BTDT out there?  Seems likely to me that it is either the master cyl
or perhaps a stuck caliper, or perhaps the power boost system.
