Yes, they will become damaged if moved.

Where are you? I've got a demolished outer CV from a VW Golf that will
probably work to hold the bearing togeather. You can borrow it for repairs
if I get it back.

I just had mine resurfaced but I doubt it lightened it much. I would think
the outside edge could shed some material, and possibly the back (toward
engine) side if you take care to remove / reinstall the timing pin. The two
magnetic pins on the pressure plate side are unused, mine broke off at the
machine shop and the car runs without.
