1985 4000S Quattro Fuel Pump Question

Hey all!  Quick one about a the fuel pump.  How can you tell if it is
working- other than the car running?  My car stopped running the other day
and I am trying to rule out possible causes.  I thought you could actually
hear it when the key was turned to the 2nd position, but I can't remember.
Can't figure it out.  Car has gas, turns over strong, alternator is okay,
all fuses and all visible engine connections seem okay.  Any help would be
very much appreciated.  Please reply to me directly as I don't receive mail
