I refinished the shift knob in my 90 using tung oil, and Minwax Helmsman
Spray Polyurethane. Removed the knob, sanded with 300-200 grit, then 1000,
then used a coat hanger to dip in a coffee cup full of tung oil and let dry.
Did the dipping in tung oil about 4 times, letting dry overnight, most
people apply using a lint free cloth. Then using the Minwax Helmsman, this
was my first time using, I applied several thin coats. This stuff works
great very easy to use, very difficult to get a run. And the best part is
..its an aerosol.
Good luck,
steve

Chris, I don't know how deep your scratches are, but Meguiar's Mirror-Glaze
products are made exactly for this situation. There is a scratch remover
(use first) and a then a final glazing compound. There is a number system
that they use for their products, but I cannot recite it accurately right
now. Once you are in front of that section in the auto parts store, it
should be obvious.
These products also work wonders on blinker and taillight lenses that have
lost their new-car shine.
Have fun.
