An annoying ticking sound

At LAST I find a reasonable explanation... this has been a problem I have
long wondered about, but have yet to hear any advice worth acting on...
People keep raving on about lifters and vacuum pumps, oil changes etc.
The advice is appreciated, but really, I just don't have the time or energy
to remedy any of these problems on the off chance that they may reduce the
problem...

And the best part is that I was lining up to replace the plugs anyway...
I'll just leave the plugs out overnight before replacing them...
