dash lights don't work wiht headlights?

Possibly the dash illumination dimmer rheostat has worn out, or something
else in the wiring path isn't making contact.  Does your center console
heater/AC panel illumination work?  If so, then perhaps the instrument
cluster's illumination bulbs are kaput.
