It will probably physically "fit" with only minor mods, but remember that
the 1.8T gets its oomph mostly through its sophisticated electronics which
means you need to swap in the whole fuel injection and ignition systems.
This means *a lot* of custom plumbing and electrical work. Also, the new
ECUs have fingers into everywhere, so you better be prepared to swap in
not just that ECU, but a lot of other systems too. For example, the
ECU will only work with the A4's instrument cluster, and that in itself
may be a giant hurdle, both electrically, mechanically and aesthetically.
It's not impossible to do, of course. I've seen an 1.8T powered VW
Sciroccos for example. Time, effort and money is the key.
If you want turbo power on the 4-cylinder it might be "easier" to just
do a home brew solution, like what Alexander Van Gerbig did with his
old 80.
