5kTQ overheating - need help

My '87 5kTQ has been misbehaving in the temperature department of late, and
has really got me stumped.
About a week ago the car overheated on the highway, resulting in a tow to
the local dealer's place and a $140 thermostat/flush'n'fill/car wash -

km/h.  Stopped for a while and then resumed travelling after topping
reservoir up - drove the rest of the way with the heat on and windows open

Did the mechanic check your thermostat or jst toss it?  That would have een
the time to check the rad and wpump function.  Being a closed system, I
think the fact that you had to top off the cooling system twice is telling.
It seems it was not full/bled from your service.  You can check your
thermostat and water pump by looking for flow with filler cap off and check
temp with appropriate thermometer.  Also check for radiator and A/C dryer
blockage. Doubtful a brand new thermostat is bad.  Probably concentrate on
pump and rad.  If your system is now full and bled, you may be all set.
