Yup. 4 wire sensors can be used too, the fourth wire is for signal
ground and should probably be grounded to the engine ground. A 3
wire could be used in a pinch for a 1 wire car, too. If you wanted
to reduce emissions on a cold start, you could wire up a 3-wire
sensor's heater circuit to some ignition-on-only circuit.
There are some variations in sensors...some use the cable jacket as a
sort of sniffer pipe for a reference...usually done on O2 sensors
down low to the ground(where they might get splashed etc) like
pre/post catalytic converter sensors. A few cars use very wide range
sensors which aren't compatible...some recent Hondas and Toyotas, I
think.
