The engine breather system. All cars have need crankcase breathing, even
if (as on older cars) its just a vent to the atmosphere. On most cars
produced in the last 30 yrs or so there is 'positive' breathing. This
usually involves running a vent from the crankcase and/or the rocker cover
to the vacuum side of the engine, via an orifice, flame trap, restrictor or
regulator so that under suitable conditions a vacuum is applied to the
crankcase environment. The aim is to prevent the build up of crankcase
pressure from piston/valve blowby and minimise the risk of oil seepage under
pressure through seals and to minimise emissions of harmful combustion
by-products , by recycling them through the engine.
