'85 4kq console removal

The center console and heater control facplate on my new '85 4kq have pry
marks from someone trying to remove the radio.
There's no resistance to moving the heater control lever, so I'd like to see
if the control cable is connected to the lever or not.
It's connected to the valve, and the valve turns with some force, but I
certainly don't have the same resistance when moving the lever.
Can someone please give me a two-step (hopefully) procedure <wild laughter>
for removing the console?
