The VW Pointer is the Mexican model of the VW Gol (meaning goal) from
Brasil. This car is actually smaller than the current Golf 4, it is
sized about the same as the VW Polo we have in Europe. The Gol series
was introduced in 1980, the current model has been in production since
1996. The old model was initally powered by a front mounted Bug engine,
hooked up to the longitudinal tranny, similar to Audi 4000. In 1985 the
watercooled 1.8 engine was installed, together with the introduction of
Sedan (Parati) and Wagon (Voyage) models. A pickup (Saviero) was also
included in the lineup. In 1987, VWdoBrasil started to export the Parati
and Voyage to USA, where they were badged as VW Fox. In the current
lineup, the hatchback is joined by a wagon and pickup. There are no
sedan model anymore. Check out http://www.vw.com.br for these cars, and
other VWs sold in Brasil.
