The good news is that VW air-cooled engines are held
in place by only 4 bolts. Undo those, release the
accelerator cable, fuel line, and some electrical
connections (and maybe clutch cable; I forget. It's
been way too many years) and the engine comes out
from below. No chain hoist needed, but a floor jack
helps. Plus the clutch packs tend to be real
inexpensive.
