Mike,
I'd hazard a guess from 0-30 or so, the 4KQ is actually a bit quicker
than the 100CSQA, but once moving, it's all 100. From personal
experience.
Anyway, the Northeast car bit does kind of make suspension work a PITA,
everything rusts into place more than (I'd imagine, never have had the
pleasure) a CA car. In fact, a recent alignment job on my 200Q (post
lowering) meant that I ended up having to replace the tie-rods, could NOT
get the adjusters to budge, heat, pounding, nasty chemicals, NOTHING
broke them loose.
I'd agree, that would be the biggest concern on that car, besides the
T-belt and the oil leak, which, if you check the archives, could be that
top end leak (can't recall what is was) that is a bit of an annoyance
issue on the V6 cars.
Finally, I'd agree, though waiting for a used UrS4/6 Avant would be a
wonderful dream, if you constantly fear getting home everyday in the
Volvo, then you have to do something about it on a NOW type basis. THe
problem with any of the "desireable" cars is that they ALL are getting
older, and all of them will eventually lose reliability until they go
through the full replacement cycle. On a sample to sample basis, I'd be
willing to bet that the 100 will be more reliable than the UrS's for two
reasons:
1) the V6 is a simpler engine, the autobox (if taken care of) is a less
complicated drivetrain that is less shocking to the whole car.
2) Ur'S's are more likely to be driven like an "S" car should be, i.e.
harder. 100CS's are probably treated albit more kindly, though arguably
their somewhat more mundane nature probably would mean not as likely with
as much owner DEEP care or respect.
Just a few thoughts from my way.
