oils

Your V8 and mine were built in 1993. They have both accumulated service
histories and mileage. In 1993, the engineers who designed our cars thought
a certain type of oil was best to use, and thus, in my case and yours, their
instructions have been followed for a certain number of miles.
I have had a lot of vehicles over the course of my lifetime. I have NEVER
had an engine failure. I have NEVER had engine trouble that could be traced
to the type of oil that I had used, and that includes new vehicles on which
I have put considerable miles and used vehicles that had considerable miles
when I bought them.
I have a 1997 GMC pickup truck that had synthetic fluids put into it when it
was first delivered to the original owner. I have had the truck since it
had 27,000 miles on it, and continue to use synthetic oil. It uses no oil
between changes.
My 1993 Audi V8 had 66,000 miles when I bought it, and now, with 74,000
miles, it uses no oil. It uses what Dr. Ingolstadt said to use.
My 1994 100CS has around 50,000 miles on it, uses a quart of oil between
7500 mile changes, and uses what Dr. Ingolstadt said it should use.
The point that I am trying to make is that if the type of oil that is used
in a vehicle is the correct type for the vehicle, then it probably will run
well throughout its design/service life, if all original maintenance
proceedures are followed. This rush to synthetic oil in older cars may or
may not help a engine to have a longer in-service life.
The only thing that IS sure about using synthetic oils is that the cost of
an oil change will be higher.
If a vehicle was delivered from the manufacturer with synthetic oil, and the
manufacturer said that was what the vehicle should have in the crankcase,
then synthetic oil is what should BE in the crankcase. Otherwise, I would
use first quality motor oil of the proper grade and viscosity, and as almost
all owner's manuals advise....change is more regular for extreme service.
Otherwise, I do what the guys who designed it said to do.
Has worked for me since 1962.
