Subject: R12/R134A conversion

Does anyone have access to the definitive 134A conversion
process, with
material list, step by step process, etc, in print?
My trip to the archives revealed more anecdotal evidence than
How-To.
I replaced the seals and receiver/drier 3-4 years ago.
The clutch 2 years ago, then the compressor locked up last year.
Does it sound reasonable that I replace the compressor.. install
the "almost
new" clutch", evacuate and recharge w/134A, or should I replace
the "almost
new" (3-4 year old) drier also?

Audi issued a Technical Service Bulletin on this in the early to mid '90s.

If your compressor seized, lots of shrapnel has circulated throught the
system. You'll want to replace the receiver/dryer and flush thoroughly.

You can use your old clutch. You'll save around $90 off the price of a
compressor. Compressors come with and without clutches. You'll need a
puller to get the old clutch off.

Conversion procedure:

1. Remove compressor, expansion valve, and receiver/dryer (R/D).
2. Replace all the "O"-rings with the green kind.
3. With these parts out of the system, you can flush the remaining parts
easier.
4. Replace the compressor, expansion valve, and R/D. Put R-134a compatible
oil in the system through these parts.
5. Button the system up.
6. Vacuum.
7. Fill with R-134a. Systems designed for R-12 usually take about 20% less
R-134a. Watch the pressures.

4.
