Silly little fuel routing question

So I was sitting at the pump today wondering....

The fuel pump delivers a large surplus of fuel to keep the pressure up.
The fuel distributor (metering head? regulator?) meters out what the
injectors need.  What happens to the rest?

Does it circulate back to the tank? just hold in the fuel lines?
