Thanks, but I'm even more confused now. I've got a picture of the part in question in my post on this over on AudiWorld. Can everyone check it out and let me know what you think?

There is a vacuum line that runs from the engine to a little cylinder that has an electrical connection. The electrical connection appears to duck into the car through the fire wall. On this cylinder there are what looks like 2 vacuum outputs (brass?) and only one has a hose on it. The one that faces the left side of the engine compartment (when facing the engine) has a hose on it that leads to the vacuum actuated solenoid that controls the recirculation flap for the AC. The one that faces to the right (when facing the engine) doesn't have a hose or even a cap on it.

Well Dave, you've found it.

That vacuum solenoid is switched when you turn on the AC, and it closes
the intake air flap, which makes the fan grab air from "over" and
through the AC evaporator, instead of outside.

Look for a "lost or missing" vac line coming from your intake manifold,
to a "T" on the firewall. (the third part of the T runs to a little
accumulator under the fender). This provides vacuum to run the
solenoid.
