I've heard that a TDI will bolt up to any 4 cyl liquid cooled VW transaxle
but I think my source was the same that said the 4's and 5's were all
interchangeable. According to what you're saying about the 80 quattro 5 cyl
trans being compatible with the 4 cyl's and the 4000 quattro 5 cyl trans not
being compatible with the 4 cyl's wouldn't that neab that Audi changed the
bell pattern on the 5 cyl's at some point?
Where do you go to do your research? I have access to Chilton's and some
Motor repair books but I don't think they go into these descriptions. Is
there a way to tell differences in bell housing patterns by codes or engine
family?
