It's called the "multi-function temperature switch." Although many people
refer to it as the temperature gauge sender/sensor (because that's one of
the functions). I don't have the part number handy, but you can look it up
at:

I just bought one last week. It's $80+ at the dealer. Lots of internet and
telephone Audi vendors sell this part for around $35.00.
I seem to go through one per year. Leave the rubber boot (condom) off.
These switch/sensors leak. And because they're upside down, the coolant
collects in that boot making a mess where the terminals go to the pins.
The new ones now all have 3 pins. If yours is origianl, it probably had 4.
