How 'bout normalizing the torque curve to wheel (road) speed?
Plot each gear's torque versus wheel (road) speed; five torque curves on the
same graph.
Each will start at the same point (0,0), but each successive gear will peak
at a higher wheel (road) speed.
Select the gear that maximizes torque for any given wheel (road) speed.
Please tell me where I've erred in my thinking....

I think (sometimes), in spite of my last post on this topic, that we tend to
make life more difficult than necessary. Carroll Smith, "Drive to Win",
recommends locating a long straight, starting in second and timing a run to
a specific point on the track using the same shift point for each gear.
Repeat the run with a shift point 300 rpm lower or higher until you have the
best time. He points out, according to theory, each gear should have its own
optimal shift point, however he would never ask a driver to shift at a
different point for each gear.
The VW Water Cooled Performance Handbook has a graphical method for
computing shift points as well as a GW basic (old book) program that is a
bit more sophisticated.

almost straight lined form the torque peak to the HP peak. The area of most
interest for this discussion is the curve after the HP peak.

This thread has contiued to educate me. And I've been experimenting with
shifts a little bit, unfortunately without a stopwatch. Thanks for all the
input.
There are several racers, tuners, etc on this list--have any of you put your
modded 10V turbo on a dyno and produced graphs or charts we could see?
