[Vwdiesel] quattro or synchro diesel

This would be if I want to use a 5 cyl turbo diesel, correct? I'm kind of
leaning away from this right now and leaning toward a 4 cyl turbo diesel or
even a TDI. I'm hearing that the 4 cyl engines won't bolt up to 5 cyl
transaxles unless the transaxle is from a later 80q, not a 4000q. I've also
been told that some early 4000q's came with 4 cyl gas engines in which case
a 4 cyl diesel would bolt up?
