In global-speak we should call them the Gen-3 Passat. Anyway,
they are emphatically *not* B-platform based. They borrow heavily
from the A2-platform VW Golf/Jetta/Corrado (with their transverse engine
layout and suspension design details), and is indeed a lengthened
A platform. Calling them 'B3/B4' Passat is technically incorrect, but
people do it because all other generations of Passats are B-platform
based, so it sort of stuck.
Looking at exterior sheetmetal can be quite deceiving.
