Tire Size for My Coupe Quattro - Help!

Pedro Rodriguez pedro.w.rodriguez at verizon.net
Tue Apr 23 18:54:23 EDT 2002

Hi,

I have a set of 17"x7.5" rims that I will be using in my 1990 Coupe Quattro.
I understand that tires should have the same circumference all the way
around to maintain a proper balance for the differentials. However, I
wonder what some of you tire and quattro experts feel about having different
width tires for the back as compared to the front.

If it is possible to go with wider tires in the back versus the front, will
I need to have a lower and wider tire for the back and a narrower and taller
tire for the front to make up for some of the addition to the circumference
added by the wider tire? A possibility that comes to mind is 245/40/17 for
the back and 225/45/17 for the front.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Pedro
1990 CQ 3B - in progress (Engine and transmission are in. I'm now doing the
wiring.)

Doug as long as you have scaled the torque to the proper gear ratio as I
think you intend, you are right on the money. This is essentially the method
illustrated in the VW h2o performance book mentioned below.

"Those of you with a passion for calculation will doubtless figure out that,
theoretically at least, the optimum shift point depends on the gear split.
Very true, but the difference is minimal and I, for one, am not about to
tell my drivers to use different shift points for different shifts. And,
yes, you could (and they did) program an automatic to do it."
Carroll Smith - "Drive to Win"

How 'bout normalizing the torque curve to wheel (road) speed?
Plot each gear's torque versus wheel (road) speed; five torque curves on the
same graph.
Each will start at the same point (0,0), but each successive gear will peak
at a higher wheel (road) speed.
Select the gear that maximizes torque for any given wheel (road) speed.
Please tell me where I've erred in my thinking....

I think (sometimes), in spite of my last post on this topic, that we tend to
make life more difficult than necessary. Carroll Smith, "Drive to Win",
recommends locating a long straight, starting in second and timing a run to
a specific point on the track using the same shift point for each gear.
Repeat the run with a shift point 300 rpm lower or higher until you have the
best time. He points out, according to theory, each gear should have its own
optimal shift point, however he would never ask a driver to shift at a
different point for each gear.

The VW Water Cooled Performance Handbook has a graphical method for
computing shift points as well as a GW basic (old book) program that is a
bit more sophisticated.

For the HP/Torque chart try:
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/hpgraph.html#5000t Note estimates can be
almost straight lined form the torque peak to the HP peak. The area of most
interest for this discussion is the curve after the HP peak.

This thread has contiued to educate me. And I've been experimenting with
shifts a little bit, unfortunately without a stopwatch. Thanks for all the
input.

There are several racers, tuners, etc on this list--have any of you put your
modded 10V turbo on a dyno and produced graphs or charts we could see?

Funny how some insurance carriers have a love 'em or hate 'em reputation.
State Farm was really bruised in the press awhile back, and they're
certainly the 800-lb. gorilla out there...but I like them too. They coughed
up more than $5000 to make my E30 BMW cabrio right a few years ago after I
slid into a guard rail... D'oh, I shoulda been driving my 4kq (MAC).

I HAVE been a loyal customer for 30 years and haven't given them too much

I have had Pirelli P400's on my 87 5kcsq for 2 years now. Quiet and quite
responsive. Very cheap.

I installed Nokian NRW's on my 90 200 tqw 3 months ago. We went on a long
trip from Chicago to Brattleboro, VT and back a month ago, and the tires
were fantastic. The traction in the snow in VT was far better than I
experienced last year when I had BFG Comp-TA HR4 tires. The tires are also
quite quiet.

While in VT, I took a morning off to visit Chris Semple @ Concord. I wish I
could have spent more time there, but wife was sitting in the car with a
book and giving me dirty looks. BAd mistake, taking wife to Chris' place !!

It was a red 1986 Coupe GT, with a 4Kq Callaway turbo kit installed,
and a custom leather interior. Also the usual (suspension, wheels,

I question whether the Gen1/2 Passat is really a stretched A platform. Acco=

The Passat had traditionally been closely associated with the VAG B platform
(i.e., Audi 80/4000/80/90/A4) with one notable exception, which is the late-
80s to mid-90s model. That model had a transversely mounted engine unlike
all other Passats.

The name has always been Passat in Europe since the beginning. The US
got different names, the B1 generation was the Dasher (essentially the same
platform as Audi Fox in the US), the B2 was the Quantum (similar to the
Audi 4000). When Audi went to the B3/B4 platforms (Audi 80/90), the
VW Passat went to a special stretched A platform, and the name was
unified to be Passat for the US. The current (post-98) Passat is once
again based on the B5 platform which is shared with the Audi A4.

IIRC it's been quite a while since Callaway discontinued it and apparently,
there's no way for them to make any more of these kits. You can however
contact Mike Gough (mdg3369 at mac.com) and ask him all the details about his
Wannabe Callaway kit (you can also search the archives for "Wannabe
Calloway kit" and find the thread that was discussed about a year ago)

Subject: Tire time, yecch!

Any comments on tire choice for our 95 A6QA? Currently running Goodyear
Eagle GT2 P195/65 R15. The 20v 90Q runs Dunlops, which I like. Can't
really complain at the 45K we've gotten on these, but I'd like some input
regarding choices. BTW, we don't even have weather here on the CA central
coast, and Lyn uses this car for her commute on the freeway, so a good
general purpose tire will do fine. TIA, John

Two reasons not to try and seriously drag race an Audi:

1. They're not bad at road racing, something that a Buick GN will never
be good at.
2. They cost far too much to make fast at the strip.

If I ever get into drag racing, it will be behind the wheel of something
like a
GN or Mustang.
