Type 44 (5000/100/200) MANUAL steering rack?

A couple years back I remember there was some discussion here about what
it would take to convert a Type-44 bodied car to a Pentosin-free
pleasure ride. Can't recall what the final verdict was, though.

Were there ever manual-steering-rack-equipped 100's/200's sold outside
of the US? I have a friend that travels overseas frequently who would be
willing to find the required parts if they even exist. So, do they?

If not from a manual-racked type 44 itself, then perhaps a rack can be
adapted from another car? Volkswagen? Lancia Beta? Anyone ever dumped
that leaking piece of crap *successfully* before? I'd LOVE to hear
experiences/thoughts of anyone who has, or who has
contemplated/researched it.

I really like my "big" Audi - a lot - and would keep it the proverbial
"forever", but these damned Pentosin problems will drive me to sell soon
it if I can't remedy the situation permanently.

Thanks for any input here, quattristi...
