Hello Listers,
I found the source of my terrible sound. First, I removed
the vacuum pump rod eliminating some of the symphony. Second,
I rechecked the right front drive shaft. The outer boot was
good (not torn) but was allowing grease to escape minutely.
The inner boot didn't exist, cv joint was still covered in
grease but gritty and visible. So, right front drive shaft
replaced with rebuilt one and I had expectation of a quiet
drive. Silence lasted for about 15 feet and the terrible
sound was still with me. Drive the car up onto ramps and
start jiggling, tapping, and pounding everything. The
problem seems to be the bearing in the output from the
center differential. It has about a 1/4 inch play when
grabbed and shaken. This has the same ring as when I am
accelerating. There also is oil leaking from the center diff.
Is there a bearing inside the output side that needs to be
replaced too ?
Any advice or btdt would help and be appreciated.
I looked in the archives for info on the R/R of this bearing
and the drive shaft and found the following info...
_When my center bearing failed, it squealed and shrieked,
_metal on metal, under load. I could put it in first and
_accelerate and the shriek got really loud. The drive
_shaft was turning and the bearing wasn't. The faster the
_shaft turned, the louder the sound.
-My guess would be one of the CV joints on the drive shaft.
-Audi says they aren't available but Anderson Bros. rebuilt
-mine a few years back when I had the problem.
_Drive shaft carrier bearing BMW #26-12-1-209-532
_(includes bearing, bracket, rubber)
-4kq center driveshaft u-joint...
-Try calling Driveline Service in Portland, OR.
-(503) 289-2264. They have a joint made by
-GWB of Germany. P/N 287000600000. It is an
-exact fit AND it has the grease fitting on it.
-Price is a bit steep at $51 but it is an exact OE match.
_I have replace a CV joint and u-joint and not rebalanced,
_seems to work fine but YMMV! I was able to obtain a CV
_from Stammler Porsche in Boulder, it is the same as the
_CV on the rear of an older 930.
_Don't have the Part # handy, email if you need it.
_There is no bushing on the CV, it is pressed directly onto
_a spline on the driveshaft. The center support bearing
_can cause all sorts of clunks when worn/dying....
