Hey ya...
Friday was a wash, essentially, as it was very cold, wet two sessions, and
the car just wasn't sticking. Despite this, I managed to get down to my
fastest times again - 1:08. I knew where I could gain some speed, and so I
was hoping for either 1) torrential rain, so that I could use the
super-whammy rain tires and blow the doors off of everything, or 2) much
warmer weather. The latter came through. Today was quite nice, about 55 or
so by lunchtime. As a result, lap times plumeted. I got no official times
in the three morning sessions, but exit speed on every corner was up 3-5 mph
over the previous day - leading me to believe that I achieved my goal of a
1:05. This was backed up by two fellows who I was dead even with - both
consistenly run 1:05's (A stripped GTV6 3.0 24V with 200+ hp, and a E30 M3
Turner-preppared J-stock race car.). Time trials were in the afternoon. I
was in the first group, but it was hard to get a good time. You got one
warmup lap, three flying, and one cooldown. Since the tires don't get to
temperature until the third lap, it was...interesting. Not as interesting as
when I spun the car on Friday into westbend (anyone who knows the track, this
is THE WORST place to go off), but interesting. I haven't gotten the
results, but a solid 1:06 is a safe bet. Thanks to Gary for making the trip
BOTH DAYS!! to support me and cheer me on - at least he got to drive on the
track! I was mid-field in my pack (expert), but had the least horsepower - I
was down at least 70hp to the next car. The only cars in my group that were
faster, really, were race cars - and some of them (320hp 246 Dino Ferrari,
DeTomaso Pantera GTS, etc...) were marginally faster than me. Highlight of
the day was when I had to brake! down the front straight for both an the M3
and the GTV6 to let them pass. Nice. Never thought I would do that.
Anyways, I'll post the times as soon as i get them. Also got a nice shot of
the car that I'll send to someone to post. Overall, a great time. Still
more speed in the car, but it gets expensive now. Also, anyone want to
translate speed for me - I'm running 225-50-15's, and hit an indicated 103 on
the straight - I'm figuring about 110mph.
Not too shabby for 130hp front driver...
:-)
Any questions, send them along
Later!
Carter
