The new performance specs are API SL & ILSAC GF-3
ILSAC =3D International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee; i=
nternational =3D USA & Japan
API =3D American Petroleum Institute
The Tri-blend was tossed and a new blend containing SuperSyn PAO was create=
d=2E The new stuff is thicker when cold or when under high shear. It's also=
 more volatile. Shifting from pump limit to pour point on the label is a wa=
y for a marketer to hide the somewhat reduced performance. Pour point can b=
e misleading, that's why cold cranking and pump limit tests were devised. B=
etter yet is to test oil after a set service life and cycled about a cold c=
haracteristic temperature of the additives (gelling can occur). Some of the=
 old tri-blend met the European engine performance requirements but not the=
 oil rheological requirements (meets wear but not HTHS), a distinction too =
fine for some. My guess that's why they changed the new label. Ironically t=
he new formula is better in this regard. Link to what's to come below:
