99 A4 Q Creak

Are you sure it's coming from inside the cabin? If it is possibly coming from the engine compartment/suspension, it sounds like a classic case of control arm failure, for which the Audi/VW 4-link front end is famous for...

Subject: 99 A4 Q Creak
Hello,
I recently purchased a 1999 A4 1.8T Q with about 60k miles. I am noticing a
persistent creak that seems to originate down near the gas/break pedals when
travelling at low speeds (<25mph). It gives one big creak when coming to a
stop, otherwise it does not seem to be related to any particular action or
to bumps in the road.
Any ideas? I too am hesitant to undergo an expensive troubleshooting with
the mechanic.
Thanks,
Heather

On my wife's car ('97 A6qw) I have just upgraded the front brakes to the A8
Rotor/ TT caliper carrier combo w/ Mintex Red Box Pads.
My wife stated there was a squeal before I did the work, but I told her not
to worry best I thought it was the rotors/pads (yellow brake light came on
about the same time).
This squeal expresses itself during any left turn angle and at any speed. It
does get louder as speed increases. At 1-3mph the sound is cyclic. But at
speeds over 5mph it sounds constant. It seems to be independent of brake
pedal pressure. The sound cannot be heard in the car with the window closed
and A/C on. Which is why did not notice before changing the rotors/pads. I
only had the windows down after the work was done.
Also, if I am going straight or in a right hand turn there are no abnormal
sounds.
My brother and I took the right side rotor and caliper off and reinstall
them. He thought everything look great. He then bounced the right front side
of the car and a small squeak could be heard.
Any ideas before I go to the mechanic? I am afraid they like to just replace
things until the problem goes away. $$$

'97 A6qw (well at least it stops better than before).
The new A8 rotors and TT caliper carriers bolted right on and fit just fine
under the 5 spoke 16" wheels.

I'm building up a used 86 5KT head for my 4KT project and was wondering if
anyone can recommend a source for good exhaust mainfold studs and nuts (and
head bolts for that matter). I recall from older posts that the Audi ones
(even new) are prone to snapping off. I checked the archives quickly, but
didn't come up with anything.
Thanks in advance.

Apparently the vacuum metalizing process deposits aluminum rather than
chrome (chromium?); maybe that makes a big difference to the EPA.
I think my reflectors are plastic but I'll check--metal ones could be
electroplated, which might open up some more options... nickel comes to
mind, but I've heard it doesn't stand up to corrosive environments well.
And yes, I still find Steve Jensen's reflective tape solution tempting!

Yup, that's my guess. The symptoms are exactly what mine were when the whee=
l bearing fails. If it only happens when making left turns then it is the R=
IGHT wheel bearing that is failing (it's the one that gets loaded in left t=
urns).
