are 1986/87 5ktq brakes really different from other years?

You understood incorrectly.  G60 brakes will not bolt up to the 84 4kS.
Also, the car is a type 81, not type 80.  It is known as an "Audi 80" in
non North Amercian markets, though.  Confused yet?
