Very simple, to me:

When you go to the shop for diagnosis, tell them up front that you
want a diagnosis only, that you want to do the work yourself.

I forget what car it is you have, but you should purchase a Bentley
manual for your car as well as taking a look at sjmautotechnik.com
for troubleshooting tips if your car is a turbo I-5.

With those two sources, a lot of mechanical problems can be diagnosed
and repaired.
