Ben,
AVS Intermediates are a previous generation Very High Performance tire,
of similar
ilk to the Bridgestone RE71 and BFG Comp T/A VR. All have better ultimate
performance than your AVS S4 tires, none are all season (and NONE
are the same as the Comp T/A HR4 which IS all-season). All will wear
quite quickly,
something that has been greatly reduced with the newer generation of High
Performance Tires
(Dunlop SP9000, BFG G-Force, Michelin Pilot) but at $49 a pop, it may be
worth having fun for
a season or so, which is all that they will last. The Intermediates have
excellent dry and wet grip,
good turn-in response and great braking, especially in the wet. Just
don't expect to winter with
them if the local temps consistantly drop to freezing, they'd be
downright dangerous, even with
quattro. These are summer tires. If you want a decent all season, the
Comp T/A HR4 are pretty
good and comparable to your AVS S4s (not quite up to the AVS performance,
but close) and
check out the Dunlop replacement for the D60A2 (no personnal experience,
but my friend loves
'em on his 100CSQ Avant, and he (used to) drive like me). To get the
higher perfomance All-Seasons
you've got to spend, however I have heard from Grassroots Motorsports
that the very pricey
Michelin Pilot XGT V4's are excellent, and the BFG G-Force KDWS are
pretty darn good at significantly
less cost. There is apparently also a Kumho H-rated all season, although
I've heard nothing about them. After
driving another lister's 200 20VQ with half to 3/4 worn Pirelli P7000
SuperSports, I would have to say I'd avoid
them. His car sounds like a LOUD truck with the worn Pirelli's, which
seems to be the reputation of
those tires. I've heard it from other's whom have had these tires, it's
soooo loud as to be intolerable for
any extended trip. They are reputed to have comparable performance to the
Pilots, but the noise is just
too much. Be aware, I have not tried any of these all seasons, as I run
snows in the winter.
