I'll try to give you an honest answer, but there is no easy-fast-short
answer. Don't buy this car unless you are very committed to owning and
caring for it. Just listing things to look at will take considerable
bandwidth. I'm sending you to Scott Mockry's web site, where he has
accumulated what you are asking about. Spend as many hours there as you
can. That is how big your question is. I'll address some details below, but
it is not exhaustive or complete.
Read Scott at http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/
Some sketchy details: At nearly 200k miles, you need ALL the maintenance
records and a 30 minute close inspection by an experienced Audi mechanic
that is familiar with the 87 5ktq. Ask him for an estimate for repairs
needed to run it safely for a year. And hold him to what he says, if he
will address that question. Pay him at least $50 for the inspection and
opinion, and be sure he drives the car for at least 15 minutes.
I'm not trying to diminish your enthusiasm, but get a compression check.
And believe that EVERY system needs at least a superficial inspection, as
this is an OLD complex and sophisticated car. Without an inspection, you
are guessing, so you have to guess on the dark side.
If you do that, you could easily set aside about $4-5 grand for unexpected
major system repairs and replacement, like radiator, steering rack, tie rod
ends, wheel bearings, hydraulic accumulator, power steering pump and hoses,
climate control system, compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier, A/C
hoses, all the refrigeration gases, emergency brake cables, calipers,
rotors, pads, rear brake compensating device, metal brake lines, flexible
brake lines, metal fuel lines, all CV joints inner and outer, entire ABS
unit with sensors and cogs in CV joints, propeller shaft center support
bearing and CV joint, rear transverse control rods, struts and springs,
alternator, starter, entire ignition system, computers, door wiring and
switches, power window regulators, turbo and turbo control devices, exhaust
system, and tires and wheels. And possibly the engine crank seals, timing
belt, and water pump. The windshield wiper blades may be OK, but I'd change
them anyhow before winter. And check the windscreen for chips and
scratches. Oh, and the speedo/odo probably needs replacement or fixing. I'm
going to dinner now. Good luck.
I have replaced nearly everything listed above, some several times, except
for the basic engine and transmission and quattro differentials on my 87
5ktq. The body probably is flawless with regard to rust, if never hit. At
247k miles, it uses a quart of synthetic 5W-50 oil when I drive it a
thousand miles in summer heat, really fast. I think the turbo may be
drawing off most of that.
In my opinion, it has proven to be the best car I ever owned, and it may be
one of the world's best automobiles. Also, the little parts and pieces and
hoses, etc, wear out, break, or get lost. And it demands a lot of attention
over the years to stay one of the best cars in the world.
