Alternators on long drives? Wet weather?

The talk about the replacement alternators made
me think of this question: What happens to an
alternator on a long drive? See, the drive to
Iowa is roughly ~20 hours and I do it
continuously. I was wondering if an alternator
can build up enough heat over that time frame to
damage itself, or just as long as it's spinning,
it ok? I didn't have any problems the way over
and back, ~100 degrees and a/c and lights on
nearly the entire span.
Second q is about the Bosch note about wet
weather causing charging problems. I see it on
alot of the web parts sites, along with just a
heading under some recall list page I found.
What's the story?
