how rare is the '02 A8L???

No.  The 'L' in A8L is simply for "lang" ("long" wheelbase).  It does not
mean the 6.0 W12 engine.  In the US, the 2001-02 A8L only comes with the
4.2 310hp V8.  A small run of A8L models with the 6.0 W12 engine was
offered for the European market.
