Audi has done this many times, probably partly because engine development
are separate programs than that of the platforms, and also to provide
a "boost" to an outgoing model.

The 1991 200q 20V is a good example, so is the 1987.5 Coupe GT 2.3,
and the 2000-02 S4 biturbo, and the V6 3.0 A6, or the upcoming Allroad V8,
or the RS4, the RS6, etc.
