90 quattro stumbling

Ive started to experience a new problem, when planting my foot in first, and
then changing into second the engine dies, until I back completely off the
throttle and then reapply there is zero power, unfortunately I have
forgotton to pull the fault codes on both occasions, although I do have an
intermittent problem with my idle switch, usually it fails to close the
circuit.... On this occasion could it be failing to open properly??
