Silicone should work fine, although a new grommet
would be a more elegant solution, it would mean
disconnecting it at the lever and threading the cable
end through.  Do you own a dehumidifier?  That'll
solve the moisture problem.  Failing that, they sell
desicant bags/boxes at home centers for people with
wet basements.  That should also do the trick,
although you may need several.
