This occured to me after I wrote the message, hadn't occured to me
where it was during the day.

Ah but David my point here is that I have TWO marks (Dots) on the
INSIDE of the sprocket, and although one seems near where it should be,
the car does NOT run with it in the standard 5 cylinder timed position
in line with the machined surface of the head as you describe, I've
changed my share of 5 cylinder timing belts here. Runs like a top
approximately one tooth off that position though (hovering back above,
ie counterclockwise looking at the engine head on) Neither of these
are marks like on my two EV engines, but those are entirely different
sprockets for the different belt pitch so go figure. A couple of the 4
cylinder sprockets about don't have the two dots either, one does.
There is absolutely no garantee this is the cam gear that came with
this engine, that much is assured, I had thought they were all roughly
the same of course excepting when they changed to the Torque-thrust
belt. Anyway I'm pulling the valve cover in the morning and looking at
the darn cam lobes to see what's what. I have a position it runs, and
runs well in, but I don't know if I like it.
