Diagnostic Help Needed on NA 88 5KSQ

I have always heard that running a car low on fuel would cause problems.
Not sure how this happens since fuel pickup point never changes, fuel is
sucked from the bottom of the tank regardless of fuel level.
Am I missing something here?
